Exploring the wetlands of the Chugoku region

The Chugoku region boasts a diverse range of aquatic environments, from wetlands scattered across the Chugoku Mountains to lakes, river mouths, tidal flats, and coastal saline wetlands.
Many migratory birds visit Lake Nakaumi, which spans Tottori and Shimane prefectures, and Lake Shinji in Shimane prefecture. In the Koigakubo Wetland in Okayama prefecture and the Yawata Wetland in Hiroshima prefecture, you can observe wetlands remaining in mountainous areas and the various plants that grow there. In addition, there are wetlands with characteristics different from typical wetlands, such as the tidal wetlands of Miyajima and the Akiyoshidai underground water system.
This page introduces wetlands and marshes throughout the Chugoku region, presented through maps and a list organized by prefecture.
