What are Penketoh & Panketoh?
Penketo and Panketo are two lakes located northeast of Lake Akan.
The name is apparently derived from the Ainu language, with Penke-to meaning the upper swamp and Panke-to meaning the lower swamp.
The lake clearly visible in the foreground is Penketo, and the one slightly visible at the arrow in the background is Panketo.
Due to the dense foliage, it is difficult to get a good view of Panketo in summer.

Origins
Volcanic activity at the time of the formation of Mount Oakan, which is said to have occurred 10,000 to 6,000 years ago, caused sediment to flow into Old Lake Akan, forming the present-day Lake Akan, Penketo, and Panketo.
Equipment, stamina, and skills
The view can be seen right from the Sokodai parking lot, so no special equipment is required.
You can easily stop by on your way back from Lake Akan.
