Katakinumashi Wetland is a quiet area that stretches out in the countryside of Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture.
Although it is located in lowland areas at an altitude of about 30 meters, it is a rare wetland in Japan that still retains the appearance of a high-altitude wetland.
The surrounding area is a peaceful landscape of rice fields, but in one corner there remains a marshland that is over 10,000 years old.

Get to know the marshes
The Katakinuma Marsh is thought to have been formed when water accumulated in the old riverbed of the Imo River.
Its origins date back more than 10,000 years.
Although it is located in lowland at an altitude of about 30 meters, it is a rare wetland with the characteristics of a high-altitude wetland, including floating island plant communities and a thick layer of peat.
Approximately 90 species of plants live here, including rare plants such as the Japanese holly, three-leaved holly, and purple earwort, which are said to have survived the ice age.

It is registered as one of the Ministry of the Environment's 500 important wetlands and a natural monument of the city, and conservation efforts are underway.
