History and origins

The Bense Marsh is thought to have developed over a long period of time as a result of water accumulating in the lowlands between the sand dunes of the Byobuyama Sand Dunes, which led to the development of lakes, marshes and wetlands.
It may be that the coastal sand dune topography and depressions that tend to collect water caused the area to change from a lake to a grassy marsh.
